Commissioning of modular laboratory line

31. Okt 2023

Last Wednesday, 25th October, the IG Scrimber held an information meeting at the Bern University of Applied Sciences in Biel. On this occasion, we presented the first part of the Scrimber laboratory line, which is equipped with a modular pair of cylinders.

As part of a research project supported by the Swiss Confederation, high-quality construction materials will be produced from wood assortments that are currently sous-exploités. This will make it possible to increase revenues from the forest side, use wood resources more efficiently and offer the construction sector a sustainable and economical alternative to briquettes and concrete.

The event was an opportunity to officially present the new Scrimber modular laboratory line, which allows the process of production of wood blocks by crushing to be studied. This process is crucial for the production of statically solid wood materials from the particles obtained. The development and construction of this innovative machine was realized in close collaboration between the HESB (Institut des matériaux et de la technologie du bois IWH in Bienne and the Institut des systèmes industriels intelligents I3S in Berthoud). This installation will have a decisive influence on research into wood materials in the future.

The event began with an inspiring introduction by Professor Frédéric Pichelin, who presented the HESB's Architecture, Construction and Civil Engineering department and its Research & Development division. Heiko Thömen, responsible for the Scrimber project at the HESB, presented the results of his department's research in the field of composite materials. Stefan Zöllig, President of IG-Scrimber, then explained the manufacturing process, the positive properties and the fascinating aspects of the innovative material that is scrimmer.

After the presentations, the participants had the opportunity to explore the wide range of research areas with the help of the laboratory facilities during a visit to the HESB technology park.

The real highlight of the event was undoubtedly the presentation and demonstration of the Scrimber modular laboratory line. This massive machine weighs more than 5 tons and allows to study the crucial parameters of the production of wire by filament. The entirely positive reactions of the participants from industry, the silviculture sector, the authorities and associations have reinforced our conviction that we can develop a material based on wood in the near future that provides answers to urgent social, ecological and economic issues.

We sincerely thank all the contributors and participants who made this event a success. We are also delighted with the many supporters who joined us on our journey towards the development of Scrimber.
